That leads me to a fairly predictable conclusion: there are no tangible benefits to buying this game on Wii U the only reason you’d want this version is if you’re either a collector, or have no other systems to play on. I accidentally stumbled upon one of them at night, and it’s the most terrying thing to have come out of Nintendo property that I’ve ever seen.Īnd that’s pretty much it – the Wii U version of Minecraft leaves a lot to be desired whichever way you look at it, from unstable performance to the underwhelming content included with it. I thought the Super Mario pack was very cute and pretty, until I’ve found out it turns Endermen into Shyguys. Once again, we face the unfair reality of gaming on Nintendo systems, where we have to pay more for a worse deal. If there were more exclusive features on offer here, like the highly requested Wii U GamePad support, maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad, but that’s not the case. Apparently, these texture packs were added to offset the higher cost of the Wii U game (it’s the most expensive version of Minecraft, alongside the Switch one, at $29.99 as opposed to $19.99 everywhere else), so it’s genuinely upsetting to know that we have to deal with a bigger price tag because of poorly optimised – and ultimately unwanted – additional content. The other three exhibit performance problems – the framerate is erratic and unpleasant even if nothing is going on, with the Fantasy pack being the worst offender, the fps drops are quite severe there.

It would’ve been nice to have an option to expand the world’s size further of course, but 864×864 is still a lot in and of itself.Īs far as exclusive content goes, the Wii U version (at least physically) comes with five free texture packs, only two of which – the Festive one and the Super Mario one – I haven’t encountered any issues with.

It’s difficult to get lost in an area of such a modest size – I’ve spent all of my 200+ hours in the same world, and got to learn where’s what in it – so there’s not much anxiety to be had here if you’re easily intimidated by the vastness of the world you’ve got to explore. The small world size I didn’t have much of a problem with – it’s 864×864, just like on Xbox 360, PS3, and PS Vita (alongside poor draw distances and obnoxious pop-in, but that’s besides the point) – but I personally found that rather comfortable. I’m reaching the point where I’m struggling to find things to do here though, so I’ll probably start a new world my next play session. Despite the fact I’ve literally put 200 hours into this game, for some reason I’ve spent all that time in this one world. Can’t speak for other versions of Minecraft, but since I’ve encountered this exact issue in its Xbox 360 demo, it’s entirely possible that’s just how this engine operates it’s still disappointing to see Wii U struggle to run such an old title regardless. I’ve no means of measuring framerates, but the game drops to what feels like 20s whenever it’s raining – it’s not just noticeable, it’s distracting to the point of being unplayable. The framerate is far more objectionable here: in normal gameplay, performance is generally serviceable – although not always ideal – but during rains, it tanks. The resolution isn’t particularly impressive – video footage looks blurry and overly compressed – but since that was the standard, I’ll give it a pass.

The game runs at 720p at an unlocked framerate, just like all the other Legacy Console versions (i.e., the Xbox 360, PS3, and PS Vita ones). Not a huge number by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m far from being done with it regardless. As a Wii U collector however, it was a no-brainer to get this game for my favourite system, and after spending over 200 hours in it, I thought I’d finally try to answer this unpleasant question: is it even worth getting Minecraft on Wii U? I’ve had this game for about a year, and while I’m not playing it all the time, it’s still impressive I’ve managed to sink that many hours into it so far. The only noteworthy addition to it was the inclusion of the Super Mario Mash-Up pack, which has been now made available in the Switch version of the game, alongside a bigger world size, better performance, and more recent updates, all of which effectively rendered the Wii U Edition utterly obsolete. Minecraft: Wii U Edition came out in 2016 to the disappointment of many: Mojang’s indie hit received absolutely no enhancements or adjustments on Nintendo’s machine, despite the Wii U GamePad’s nearly infinite potential for this kind of game.
